The Thematic edition #43 of the journal CADERNOS PROARQ presents essays and due research that focus on criticism and the presentation of the means of assembling an architectural memory that demonstrates the cultural exchange promoted “in-between seas”, but also by instances of thoughts that are in dialogue. Building this scope and the analysis process of this edition we may find the special editors Priscilla Peixoto, Daniela Ortiz dos Santos, Guilherme Bueno, Joana Mello de Carvalho e Silva, Mário Magalhães and Rute Figueiredo, specially invited by the Editorial Committee to lead this intellectual production.

The texts presented in this edition are the result of a Call for submissions from researchers in the fields of architecture, urbanism and related areas, as well as of the presentation of works derived from the II Colóquio Crítica, Mídia e Memória | Transatlantic Dialogues in Architecture, taking place in 2024 – all submitted and evaluated in a double-blind process.

The edition, therefore, brings together bibliographical contents that analyzes the critical operation in architecture – its objects, its practices and its actors – constituted in the Atlantic transit. It addresses the different mediation mechanisms (translations, publications and international meetings) that made it possible to structure networks of relationships, contact and exchange between social actors from different critical cultures on the shores of this ocean and which, above all, intersect it.

Envisioning a New European Bauhaus Stage—A Call for More Embodied Research in Architecture Education

The New European Bauhaus (NEB) set out to create an updated and enhanced version of its historical namesake. So far, this article observes, the initiative has somewhat avoided the fields of performance and stage work. Yet, these areas were not only of great importance for the original Bauhaus idea.

Embodied knowledge and an experiential understanding of space also appear to be key competencies for the NEB’s intended goals: shaping a positive, inclusive, and sustainable future. Drawing on the historic Bauhaus stage workshop, the article invites to consider the potentials that the fields of dance and theater offer for future design and architectural education and practice. More precisely, it proposes to envision a New European Bauhaus Stage, connecting the fields of architecture and the performing arts. Structured into two sections, the article first provides historical insights into the work and organization of the historical Bauhaus Stage. In the second part, it outlines some more recent developments in the field, introducing a selection of projects working at the intersections of architecture and performance. Reflecting on both, the older and the newer ideas and initiatives, and their inspi-rational potential for architecture and architecture education, it then goes on to outline what a New European Bauhaus Stage might look like. It proposes a decen-tral pan-European think-and-do-tank, aiming to foster embodied knowledge and research in architecture. Rather than offering a recipe or concrete didactic advice, the manifesto-like article aims to inspire its readers to develop new projects and collaborations.

“The Case for Self-Education – The Self-Help Manuals of the Communication Centre of Scientific Knowledge for Self-Reliance”, in: ABE – Architecture Beyond Europe, No. 21, 2023.

This paper addresses self-help manuals presenting planning, building and survival knowledge in the form of comic strips. They were designed by the Communication Centre of Scientific Knowledge for Self-Reliance (CCSK) and distributed globally, with a particular focus on India. The CCSK, founded in 1982-83 by architects Yona Friedman and Eda Schaur and funded by the United Nations University (UNU), imagined a multidirectional exchange of different forms of expertise, taking the knowledge and agency of non-professionals into account and aiming to question conventional concepts of the expert. This paper asks how different forms of expertise were acknowledged, constructed, and challenged in the CCSK manuals. It situates Schaur and Friedman’s work within the discourse on self-help in general and on “appropriate technology” and the role of communication media and visualization techniques in development aid in particular. Although the knowledge transfer from “developing countries” to industrialized ones remained largely imaginary, the CCSK contributed to establishing development as a global and mutual learning process, a concept especially advocated by the UNU.

Utopia Computer. The “New” in Architecture?

The critical concern of the book “Utopia Computer” is the euphoria, expectation and hope inspired by the introduction of computers within architecture in the early digital age. With the advent of the personal computer and the launch of the Internet in the 1990s, utopian ideals found in architectural discourse from the 1960s were revisited and adjusted to the specific characteristics of digital media. Taking the 1990s discourse on computation as a starting point, the contributions of this book grapple with the utopian promises associated with topics such as participation, self-organization, and non-standard architecture. By placing these topics in a historical framework, the book offers perspectives for the future role computation might play within architecture and society.

Summary

Experiments in architectural education in the post–World War II era that challenged and transformed architectural discourse and practice.

In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural discourse and practice. This book explores and documents these radical pedagogies and efforts to defy architecture’s status quo.

The experiments include the adaptation of Bauhaus pedagogy as a means of “unlearning” under the conditions of decolonization in Africa; a movement to design for “every body,” including the disabled, by architecture students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley; the founding of a support network for women interested in the built environment, regardless of their academic backgrounds; and a design studio in the USSR that offered an alternative to the widespread functionalist approach in Soviet design. Viewed through their dissolution and afterlife as well as through their founding stories, these projects from the last century raise provocative questions about architecture’s role in the new century.

Italian Roots in Latin American Architectural History

Abstract

Beginning in the 1960s, architects across Central and South America and the Caribbean began using the phrase “Latin American” to describe a collective body of built work. A term that carried a complex, heavily politicized history made its way into the hemispheric discourse by way of several individuals, organizations, and projects with direct ties to Italy. They include the Italian-born architects and historians Roberto Segre and Graziano Gasparini, and the latter’s brother, influential photographer Paolo Gasparini. All participated in transatlantic projects sponsored by UNESCO and the Rome-based Istituto Italo-Latino Americano that produced exhibitions, publications, and conferences designed to assemble the architectural traditions of the non-Anglophone hemisphere into forms permitting wider consumption, particularly in Europe. This essay considers how connections to Italy contributed to the trajectories of key individuals and initiatives, and its implications for how the region’s architecture is consumed by a global audience, and how it sees itself.

Der Beitrag untersucht die frühneuzeitlichen Grenzen der Stadt Paris als liminale Räume. Dabei geht es vor allem um die Entstehung von Promenierzonen durch die Auflassung der Stadtbefestigung unter Ludwig XIV. Die dadurch geschaffenen Boulevards stellen ein zentrales, vielfach mythisiertes Element der Stadtgestalt der französischen Kapitale dar, in dem entgrenzte Dynamik und gouvernementale Kontrolle miteinander ringen.

Performance on Display – Zur Geschichte lebendiger Kunst im Museum

Lisa Beißwanger’s book, published in December 2021, examines when, how, and why art came ‘alive’ in museums. The investigation focuses on performance exhibitions and events in US museums of the 1970s. The book illuminates the complex interconnections of artists, institutions, the market, and cultural politics that led to a general ‘eventization’ of the museum.

Abstract:

Live performances are now an everyday occurrence in art museums. Yet is this really a new development? When, how and why did art come to life in the museum?
Starting with the U.S. art system of the 1970s, a nucleus of early performance, this book explores the little-known beginnings of the phenomenon of “performance on display.” To do so, it examines selected performances and exhibitions-from dance to body art to performance art, and explores the role of distribution networks and state arts funding policies. Moving away from the established narrative of anti-institutional performance, this volume rewrites performance and museum history and opens up an exciting cultural-historical panopticon.

Architektur für die Nation? Frankreich im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts

Der Text fokussiert die Architektur in der französischen Hauptstadt im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zentral ist dabei die Frage, inwieweit die Frage nationaler Repräsentation bestimmend für das Bauen in Paris war. Die Dritte Republik (1870‒1940) hatte zur (öffentlichen) Architektur – oder zumindest zu ihrer zentralen staatlichen Steuerung ‒ eigentlich ein ambivalentes Verhältnis, setzte eher punktuelle Akzente. Diese konnten allerdings herausragend sein; viele gelten bis heute, selbst wenn sie anfangs umstritten waren, als Repräsentanten der ‚Grande Nation‘ und ihrer Kapitale, so an allererster Stelle etwa der Eiffelturm von 1889.

Deutsche Botschaften. Zwischen Anpassung und Abgrenzung

Newly constructed embassies simultaneously convey prestige and establish a national identity. Their primary aim—to represent a state in a foreign country and reflect its societal self-image—turns them into political symbols. Over the past 150 years, Germany has consistently sought to express itself through the distinct architecture of its government buildings in other countries. In particular, the new diplomatic buildings constructed during the forty-year division between the GDR and FRG document the close relationship between political, cultural, and personal choices and their contexts. From their extraterritorial positions, the buildings offer an expanded view of history and self-conception. To this day, they continue to shape representative architecture abroad.

Architektur, Bewegung, Gewaltsamkeit. Poelzig, Mendelsohn – und Montage

Der Beitrag befasst sich damit, wie Bewegung in gebaute Strukturen übersetzt wird. Die Darstellung setzt an Hans Poelzigs I.G.-Farben-Verwaltungsgebäude in Frankfurt am Main an und schält zunächst markante Mobilitätsmotive des Gebäudes sowie deren Gegenspieler heraus. Anschließend behandelt sie theoretische wie morphologische Bezüge der Architektur zum Leitmedium der dynamischen Moderne – zum Film. Die intermediale Verzahnung beider Künste wird dabei nicht nur anhand von Poelzig selbst rekonstruiert, sondern auch von Werken und Gedanken des Zeitgenossen Erich Mendelsohn. Über die Scharnierkategorie der Montage wird dann die Verbindung zu filmischer und architektonischer Bewegung hergestellt – und gezeigt, inwiefern in diese Gewaltsamkeit kulturell encodiert ist.

This paper explores Le Corbusier’s relation to the American continent, yet with a particular focus on the visions he created before his trip of 1929. Not only did his vision go far beyond the sphere of the United States, but it also proved to be influenced by individuals with whom he shared admiration and affinity. This web of people encompassed patrons, politicians, painters and poets. Brazilian businessman Paulo Prado is here revealed as crucial protagonist, and for the first time amply discussed through this approach to Le Corbusier and the Americas. Prado went beyond the agency of those engaging lectures and housing commissions overseas. Primarily linked to the image of a financial patron, Prado’s ideas of modernity and São Paulo identity were often obfuscated by the work of Antropofagia movement founding member Oswald de Andrade. And yet, Prado’s social, political and intellectual capital was critically important for the 1920s economic and cultural exchanges between Europe and Brazil. While examining the encounters between Prado and Le Corbusier, a new window of investigation and periodization is opened in order to construct Le Corbusier’s connections with an elite eager to create a fresh interest in the cultural economy of the Transatlantic scene.

Gilles Deleuze und die Anyone Corporation. Übersetzungsprozesse zwischen Philosophie und Architektur

Der US-amerikanische Architekturdiskurs der 1990er Jahre ist entscheidend von den Theorien Gilles Deleuzes geprägt. Die Aneignung seiner philosophischen Konzepte und jener, die er gemeinsam mit Félix Guattari entwickelt hat, findet vor allem innerhalb des architekturtheoretischen Netzwerks der »Anyone Corporation« statt: In ihren Diskursen wimmelt es von glatten Räumen, organlosen Körpern, Rhizomen, Falten, abstrakten Maschinen und Diagrammen. Frederike Lausch zeigt auf, wie sich die »Anyone Corporation« durch die Bezugnahme auf Deleuze als intellektuelle Elite der Architekturdisziplin inszeniert und wie im Zuge der Entpolitisierung seiner Theorien die »Post-Criticality«-Bewegungen entstehen.

Die seit 2004 vom Institut für Sozialforschung herausgegebene Zeitschrift WestEnd. Neue Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung richtet sich an ein breites intellektuelles Lesepublikum. An ihre berühmte Vorgängerin, die in den Jahren 1932 bis 1941 erschienene Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung, schließt sie mit dem Gedanken der Interdisziplinarität und dem Anspruch einer kritischen Gesellschaftstheorie an. Zur Veröffentlichung kommen Aufsätze und Essays aus unterschiedlichen sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, die zur Analyse der aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Lage beitragen. Die Rubrik »Studien« enthält jeweils drei Aufsätze, die eine grundsätzliche Frage der Sozial- oder ästhetischen Theorie behandeln. Ein »Stichwort«, das den Schwerpunkt der jeweiligen Ausgabe anzeigt, versammelt Beiträge zu einem zeitdiagnostisch relevanten Thema.
